Although archery probably dates back to the Stone Age (around 20,000 BC), the earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted it at least 5000 years ago for purposes of hunting and warfare.It had its debut at the 1900 Summer Olympic Games and has been contested in 13 Olympiads. Eighty three different nations have appeared in the Olympic archery competitions, with France appearing the most often at 11 times. Recurve archery is the only discipline of archery featured at the Olympic Games.

This year, the archery event will be held at the Olympic Green Archery Field from August 9-15, 2008.

The sport was introduced to the Olympic Games by the Greeks in the late 7th century BC. Greek boxers used thongs of soft leather to bind their hands and forearms for protection.

It has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since its introduction to the program at the 1904 Summer Olympics, except for the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, because Swedish law banned the sport at the time.

The boxing event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held at the Workers' Indoor Arena in Beijing from August 9-24, 2008.

 

judo olympic sportJudo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. Judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad execpt in 1968. Only male judoka participated until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when women participated as a demonstration sport.

Judo is a traditional Japanese wrestling sport. The word ju-do means the "gentle way." The term first appears in the 1st century chronicles of Chinese emperor Kuang Wu. The first part of the word, ju, means gentleness or pliancy, and reflects the fact that judo emphasises yielding to an opponent's strength to overcome them, rather than attempting to defeat them by force. Do is a Japanese term meaning "the way" and is similar to the Chinese tao.

shooting olympic sportShooting sports have been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics except at the 1904 and 1928 editions.Women were first allowed to compete in Olympic shooting in 1968.

Shooting originated as a means of survival, as it was practised in order to hunt game for food. In the 19th century, however, as the industrial revolution made hunting for food less necessary for many people, shooting evolved into a sport.

The shooting event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held at Beijing Shooting Range Hall and Beijing Shooting Range CTF at Shijingshan District from August 9-17, 2008.

 

weightlifting olympic sportAs a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, Weightlifting has been on the programme of the Olympic Games every year except for 1900, 1908 and 1912. The Olympic weightlifting programme has developed a great deal throughout the decades. Today lifters compete in the snatch and the clean and jerk and are classified according to their combined total result.

At the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, men competed in eight bodyweight categories: up to 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg, 85kg, 94kg, 105kg and +105kg. Women participated in seven categories: up to 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg, and +75kg. The programme of events for the 2008 Beijing Games is the same.

 

wrestling olympic sportWrestling was on the programme at the first modern Olympics in 1896, and 1900 was the only year that wrestling did not feature on the programme at all. Both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling have been consistently contested at the Olympics since 1920. Prior to that (except in 1908), only one form was used, usually Greco-Roman.
