The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are called ‘Fuwa’ which literally means "Good-luck dolls". The Fuwa were released on November 11, 2005 at an event, which marked the 1000th day before the Opening of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Workers' Stadium.
The Fuwa is a set of five doll mascots, representing the five elements of nature – the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky, which include, Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. Each of these five names uses a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. When you put their name together, they sound identical to a phrase meaning 'Beijing welcomes you' or 'Welcome to Beijing'. The five figures composing the 2008 Beijing Summer Games Mascots also draw their color and inspiration from the five Olympic Rings.
