Yingying's Sports

Like all antelopes, Yingying is fast and agile and can swiftly cover great stretches of land as he races across the earth. A symbol of the vastness of China's landscape, the antelope carries the blessing of health, the strength of body that comes from harmony with nature. The selection of the Tibetan Antelope reflects Beijing commitment to a Green Olympics. His head ornament incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Sinkiang cultures and the ethnic design traditions of Western China. Strong in track and field events, Yingying is a quick-witted and agile boy who represents the yellow Olympic ring.

Gymnastics has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympic Games. For thirty years, only men were allowed to compete. Women's events were introduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The competition was held in artistic gymnastics discipline until 1984, when rhythmic gymnastics discipline was added to the program of the Olympics. Since 2000, trampolining discipline has also been competed.

The gymnastics event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from August 9-24, 2008.

The artistic gymnastics and trampoline competitions will be held at the National Indoor Stadium and the rhythmic gymnastics will be held at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium.

Athletics, known as Track and Field in the United States, has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement in 1896.Today, athletics is rivalled only by football (soccer), basketball and volleyball as the most practised sport. There are basically six "categories" within track and field athletics: running, hurdling, walking, jumping, throwing and multi-events. Each of the categories include several different events, now fairly standardised throughout the world.

The athletics event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from August 15-24, 2008.

The athletics competitions will be held at the National Stadium in the Olympic Green. The starting point of the marathon event is at the Tiananmen Square and the finish point in the National Stadium.

The start/finish point of the race walk event is at the National Stadium. The race will be a round trip on a 2km course at the boulevard in the Olympic Green.

Table tennis which is widely practised throughout the world has been in the Summer Olympic Games since 1988 in Seoul. China have been by far the dominant country in table tennis, winning a total of 33 medals in 20 events.Table tennis developed in the late 19th century, although its origins are not well documented. It is usually considered to be of English origin, and is described as a "miniature" tennis that was played indoors in the 1880s and 1890s.

The table tennis event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held at the Peking University Gymnasium in Beijing from August 10-17, 2008.

Tennis(lawn tennis) was part of the Summer Olympic Games program from the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics, but was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics. After two appearances as a demonstration sport, it returned as a full medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics and has been played at every edition of the Games since then.

During the Olympics, men and women compete in singles and doubles events. There are no mixed doubles on the current Olympic programme, although it was an event in 1900, 1906, 1912, 1920, and 1924. In addition, Olympic tennis is now open to all players, thus many of the world's great professionals compete.

The game of Hockey has been around from the time of early civilization. Some of the reports find the earliest origin of the game 4000 years back.It is a game played between two teams on a field with  curved sticks and a small hard ball.In 1908 hockey was included in the modern Olympic Games. The most extra ordinary aspect of its evolution is that a game once so rough and unruly was adopted by women. 

The hockey games of the 2008 Olympic Games will be held at the Hockey Field, Olympic Green.

Cycling has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement in 1896. It is one of the few sports that has been on the programme of every Olympic Games. The programme has varied but now consists of road races, track races and mountain biking.

The cycling events of the 2008 Olympic Games will be held August 9-23. Track, mountain bike and BMX events will be held at Laoshan venues in Shijingshan District of Beijing while road cycling will be held at the Urban Cycling Road Course.
